UNS Emission Free Day, Student’s Motorcycle Gets Stuck at the Parking Lot

Surakarta – During Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Emission Free Day on Friday (7/10/2022), a female student of UNS was experiencing trouble in taking out her motorcycle from the parking lot due to the very small space between motorcycles.

Emission Free Day is a routine program that is conducted by UNS on every first Friday of the month. This program was established as a movement to create a friendly environment with clean air along with UNS’ identity as a green campus. This program received various responses from the students. Mirna, one of the students said that she liked the idea of this program because she can enjoy the campus road while walking without being disrupted by the cars or motorcycles. On the other hand, some students also complained that they felt tired of walking since they could not use their motorcycles.

Even though UNS required students to avoid using any emission-produced vehicles inside the campus, students can still bring their personal vehicles. UNS provided several temporary parking lots to support this program. However, as all the people entering UNS used the same parking lots, most of the parking lots became very crowded. Moreover, because of the small space, each motorcycle was parked too close to one another. “I hate the fact that it’s difficult for me to take my motorcycle out of the parking lot. There was a motorcycle that was parked too close next to mine, I tried to move it aside but the owner locked the handlebar so I couldn’t do anything about it” said Lina, a student of UNS who got her motorcycle stuck.

Lina explained that she had to struggle alone because there were no parking attendants to help her at the parking lot. She also believed a reason why the other owner locked the handlebar was because of being afraid if the motorcycle gets stolen due to the absence of parking attendants. Regarding this issue, Lina expressed her hope for UNS, “I hope that UNS provides more parking attendants in every parking lot to help whenever there is someone who struggles like me.”
